How to Unlock Races in EverQuest Legends

Every race in Legends is something you unlock, not something you are stuck with. Each one is gated behind a set of Untapped Potential achievements that you complete by maxing faction with that race's home factions. Grind the faction yourself, or buy a Race Unlock Token to open the race instantly. Here is how the system works and the fastest route for all 15 races.

How race unlocking works

Unlocking a race is a faction achievement, not a class quest. Every race has its own Untapped Potential achievement set, and each achievement asks you to reach maximum standing, the Ally level (commonly cited as around +2000), with one of that race's home factions. Complete the whole set and the race unlocks so you can create it or swap onto it, keeping your levels and progress.

Most races require you to max three factions. A few are lighter: Iksar keys off a single faction, and Half Elf unlocks for free the moment you unlock Human (Qeynos) or Wood Elf. Because faction never needs to be held all at once, you can knock the factions out one at a time, which is what makes the grind manageable.

Two ways in

Grind the faction, or buy the token

Free · the grind

Max the race's factions

Find the race's home factions (the table below lists them), then farm standing to Ally with each one. This is almost always repeatable turn-ins, hand a stack of an item to the right NPC, gain faction, repeat, sometimes paired with kills that raise the same factions. Every hand-in grants at least +5, so it is steady, if long, work. When the whole Untapped Potential set clears, the race is yours at no cost.

Fast · the token

Race Unlock Token

Prefer to skip it? A Race Unlock Token from the in-game store unlocks a race immediately, no faction required. It is the shortcut for players who want a specific racial trait now, like moving a tank onto an Ogre for frontal stun immunity, without spending days on turn-ins. One token unlocks one race.

Do it faster

Faction grinding, done efficiently

1 · Find the repeatable turn-in

Stack and hand in

Almost every race has one repeatable turn-in that raises multiple home factions at once, like Tumpy Tonics in Kaladim for Dwarf. Buy or craft the item in bulk, hand in stacks, and let the faction pile up. Prioritize the turn-in that touches the most factions per hand-in.

2 · Reach hostile NPCs safely

Illusions, sneak, invis, feign

Some turn-in NPCs sit inside a city where you start out KOS because you have not built that faction yet. Illusion items or spells, Sneak, Invisibility, and Feign Death let you slip in and hand items over without getting flattened. This is standard, solo-friendly faction work.

3 · One faction at a time

No simultaneous cap

You never have to hold several factions at max together, so clear them in whatever order is convenient. Finish one faction to Ally, tick that achievement, then move to the next. Your trio build handles all of it solo, so this is pure patience, not a group task.

Faction gains, item costs, and turn-in counts are community-documented and shift with patches. Treat the numbers below as a scale, not a spec, and confirm current values in-game.

Is it worth the grind?

Which unlocks pay off

The unlock is only worth the time if the racial trait matters at the level cap. A few clearly do.

Best value

Ogre, Troll, Iksar

Ogre for frontal stun immunity, the single best tank racial, plus Troll and Iksar for fast regeneration and, on Iksar, natural AC. These are the unlocks tanks and solo grinders chase, and the ones most worth a token if you would rather not grind. See the full trait breakdown on the races and racial benefits page.

Skip if casual

Most casters and support

For casters and support classes, the early stat edge from a race mostly fades once Alternate Advancement and gear come online. If your primary is a mana class, do not sweat a "wrong" starting race. Unlock at your leisure, or not at all, and let your trio build carry the load.

Common questions

Race unlock FAQ

Do you have to grind faction to unlock races?

Not necessarily. Each race unlocks by completing its Untapped Potential achievements, which means reaching maximum faction with the race's home factions. You can do that faction work yourself, or buy a Race Unlock Token from the in-game store to unlock the race instantly and skip the grind.

What faction level do you need?

Maximum standing, the Ally level, commonly cited as around +2000, with each of the race's home factions. Most races have three factions to max. A few are lighter: Iksar keys off a single faction, and Half Elf comes free once you unlock Human (Qeynos) or Wood Elf.

Do you keep your levels when you unlock a new race?

Yes. Unlocking a race adds it as an option you can create or swap into without losing character progress. That is what lets a tank move onto an Ogre for stun immunity, or a solo grinder onto a Troll for regeneration, without rerolling.

Which race is easiest to unlock?

Kerran, because it has no faction grind attached. Half Elf is next since it unlocks automatically alongside Human (Qeynos) or Wood Elf. And any race can be unlocked instantly with a Race Unlock Token.

Can you unlock races solo?

Yes. Faction grinding is repeatable turn-in and kill work that a solo trio build handles on its own. You never need a group. Use illusions, sneak, invisibility, or feign death to reach turn-in NPCs whose faction you have not built yet.
