The Trio system

Class Switching & Unlocks

Every EverQuest Legends character fuses three classes into one. Two of those slots you can swap whenever you like, and the third, your primary, you unlock and change at a hub city. Here's exactly how class switching works, and how to change your class without rerolling.

How the Trio works

Your three class slots

You don't pick one class in Legends, you fuse three, and all their abilities stack. But the three slots behave differently when it comes to changing them.

1

Primary class

Chosen at character creation and tied to your race — your race decides which primary classes you can start as. It shapes your armor, your core identity, and it's the one slot that takes an unlock to change.

2

Secondary class

Also chosen at creation, but it can be any class, not just race options. This is where most of your flexibility lives, and you can change it freely later.

Swap freely · no unlock

Tertiary class

Unlocks at level 10 and can also be any class. Like your secondary, you can change it whenever you want with no unlock required.

The easy part

Changing your second & third class

Your secondary and tertiary classes can be changed without any unlock. That's the heart of Legends' flexibility: don't overthink these two slots at creation, because you can re-tune them for whatever you're doing. Leveling and want a pet to tank? Slot a Magician. Heading into a tough camp and need a slow? Swap in a Shaman. Because all three classes' abilities stack, retuning your second and third is how you adapt a single character to solo, group, or endgame without rolling an alt.

The practical takeaway: pick a primary you're confident in, then treat the other two slots as a toolkit you reshape on the fly. Plan combinations in the Build Forge or browse all 560 trios to see what each pairing can do.

The commitment slot

Unlocking & changing your primary class

Your primary is the one slot that isn't free to swap. It starts race-locked, and to change it you unlock other primary options and then switch at a major city.

1 · Unlock the option

Earn new primary classes

You begin with the primary classes your race allows. To gain access to others, you unlock them through progression, so the roster of primaries you can switch to grows as you play. (Want a different race's options entirely? See changing your race.)

2 · Visit a hub city

Swap at any major city

Once an option is unlocked, you can switch your primary to any unlocked class at any major hub city. No reroll, no lost levels, you keep your character and change the engine under the hood.

3 · Rebuild around it

Re-tune the trio

A new primary changes your armor and core kit, so revisit your second and third slots (both free to swap) to complement it. The Forge makes it easy to test the new combination before you commit in-game.

The multi-class system is confirmed in the official EQL FAQ (primary is race-based and swapped at hub cities among unlocked options; second and third change without unlocks). The exact requirements to unlock each primary are early and community-documented, so confirm the specifics in-game.

Play it smart

How to think about it

Commit the primary

Choose slot 1 with care

Since the primary takes an unlock to change, pick a class (and race) you actually want to main. Tanks and pure roles especially want the right primary from the start. Not sure? The class guides break down what each brings.

Experiment freely

Treat slots 2 & 3 as a toolkit

These cost nothing to change, so swap them for the content in front of you. One character can be a solo grinder, a group healer, and an endgame striker just by re-tuning the free slots. Try combinations in the Trio Explorer.
