Blacksmithing forges ore into weapons and the banded and plate armor that carries melee classes. It is one of the most useful tradeskills to level, since so much mid-game plate and chain runs through it, and the early climb is cheap vendor-bought ore and water.
Every combine happens in a Forge, found near the tradeskill merchants in most towns. Your Strength, Intelligence, or Wisdom (highest of the three) governs your chance to gain a skill point, and a failed combine keeps the container but loses the ingredients, so buy your materials in bulk and expect some waste on the way up.

Metal Bits and Sheet Metal are the base components for almost everything above them, so batch a big stack before each armor push.
A forge to combine at, found near the smithing merchants in most cities, and a steady supply of ore and Water Flasks. Your highest of Strength, Intelligence, or Wisdom governs your chance to gain a skill point.
Make Metal Bits to 21, Studs and Sheet Metal through the 40s and 50s, Large Lanterns to around 68, then grind banded armor from 69 to about 115. Past that you move to Ornate Chain or Fine Plate using High Quality Ore.
Around 200 for most players. Once you pass 200 in any one tradeskill, the rest cap at 200 until you buy the Crafting Mastery alternate advancement, and recipes exist up past 240.
It drops from goblins in Solusek's Eye, Permafrost, and Runnyeye, and you need it for the high-end Ornate Chain and Fine Plate combines.
Recipes and trivial values are community-sourced from the EQL wiki, so confirm exact numbers and vendors in game.
