Brewing makes the drinks that quench thirst and, higher up, buff your character. The early climb is cheap vendor ale ingredients, and a single workhorse recipe carries you through most of the mid game, so it is one of the simplest skills to push to the cap.
Every combine happens in a Brew Barrel, found near the tradeskill merchants in most towns. Your Intelligence or Wisdom (whichever is higher) governs your chance to gain a skill point, and a failed combine keeps the container but loses the ingredients, so buy your materials in bulk and expect some waste on the way up.

The Cyclops Skull for Skull Ale drops from the undead cyclops in South Karana and is reusable, so one skull carries the whole 31 to 151 grind. Handy side recipes: Bog Juice (21), Heady Kiola (46, used in Tailoring), Ale (68), and Tumpy Tonic (135, needed for the SoulFire quest).
