The Dungeon Crawl System

How EverQuest Legends turned every indoor dungeon into a Dungeon Crawl: what you clear, what you earn, and why farming an indoor dungeon is now clear-and-re-run instead of camping a spawn. Written for trio play.

What a Dungeon Crawl is

As of the September 9, 2026 update, what used to be called Non-Respawning Zones are now Dungeon Crawls, and they cover every indoor dungeon in the game. Inside a Dungeon Crawl, nothing you kill respawns naturally. You enter your own instance of the dungeon, work through it toward a clear, and the population you cut down stays down.

This is the single biggest thing to understand about farming indoor dungeons in Legends: there are no placeholders and no repop timers. You do not sit on a spot waiting for a named to pop. You clear toward it, kill it, finish the crawl, and re-run the instance if you want another go.

How you finish a crawl

To complete a Dungeon Crawl you need to do two things in your instance:

  • Slay every rare creatureThe named and rares are the required kills. Helpfully, rare creatures show directly on your map while you are in a Dungeon Crawl, so you can see what is left to find rather than sweeping the whole zone blind.
  • Clear enough of the populationYou also have to kill enough of the zone's original monster population. You do not have to clear every last trash mob, but you cannot skip straight to the rares either.

What you earn for finishing

Completion is the payout, not each kill

Finishing the crawl grants motes and experience, and everything you killed along the way may add its loot and coin to a Bonus Chest that opens on completion. On top of that, completing a crawl refunds your instance charge, so a clean clear costs you nothing to have run.

The catch is difficulty: the easier the zone is for you, the smaller the payout, and if a crawl is too easy you will not earn the instance recharge at all. Farming grey content for the Bonus Chest does not pay, the system wants you clearing something that is actually a challenge for your trio.

That difficulty-to-reward link pairs directly with the Motes of Potential system: a crawl you clear at a real challenge level feeds both your upgrade currency and your Bonus Chest at once.

What changed, and what it means for farming

If you are used to classic EverQuest, unlearn the camp. There is no placeholder to kill on a loop, no timer to sit on, and no contested spot, because your instance is your own. The old loop of camp-the-placeholder-and-wait is replaced by a route:

  • Enter your instanceEach indoor dungeon spins up a personal instance for you and your trio.
  • Clear toward the rares on your mapKill efficiently toward the map-marked rares while chipping the population requirement.
  • Finish for the Bonus ChestComplete the crawl to bank the motes, experience, Bonus Chest loot and coin, and your instance charge refund.
  • Re-run if you want the drop againWant another shot at a specific item? Run the instance again. That is the new version of farming a named, and it means no one can hold the camp against you.

Which zones are Dungeon Crawls

Every indoor dungeon. That includes the marquee farming spots our guides cover: Lower Guk, Cazic-Thule, Nagafen's Lair, Kedge Keep, Castle Mistmoore, Solusek's Eye, and the rest. Outdoor zones still work the old way, with normal respawns, so this is specifically an indoor-dungeon rule.

Trio strategy

  • Pick a difficulty that paysRun the crawl at a tier that is a genuine challenge for your trio. Too easy and you lose the instance recharge and shrink the payout. This is the same logic as the D4 mote farm.
  • Clear efficiently, not exhaustivelyYou need the rares plus enough population, not a 100% sweep. Use the map markers to plan a route that hits every rare while clearing sufficient trash on the way.
  • Bring the zone's kitThe crawl does not change what a zone throws at you. Fire resist for the Solusek and Nagafen dungeons, water breathing for Kedge Keep, a slow for the hard named. See the individual farm target guides.
  • Re-run for a specific dropSince there is no camping, chasing one item means repeated clean clears of the instance. Factor the clear time, not a spawn timer, into how long a farm takes.

Frequently asked

  • Do mobs respawn in a Dungeon Crawl? No. Nothing you kill respawns naturally inside the instance. To fight the population again you re-run the crawl.
  • Are there still placeholders? No. Indoor dungeons have no placeholders or repop timers now. Rares are fixed spawns that appear on your map, and you clear toward them.
  • What is the Bonus Chest?A chest that opens when you complete a crawl, holding loot and coin from what you killed, alongside the motes and experience the completion grants.
  • Why did I not get my instance charge back? The crawl was too easy for you. The recharge refund and the full payout scale with difficulty, so run something that actually challenges your trio.
  • Does this apply to outdoor zones? No. Dungeon Crawls are indoor dungeons only. Outdoor zones still respawn the normal way.
