A house in mourning
The Everlings made their fortune the way great houses do: trading in rare and curious things, some of them darker than they should have kept. Then the house broke. A servant, pushed past breaking by years of cruelty, took Lord Rikantus Everling's enchanted sword and killed all seven of his daughters in a single night.
Grief turned the lord to necromancy. Rikantus is raising the dead inside his own walls, trying to pull his daughters back, and the pristine manor has curdled into a house of horrors full of raised beasts, patchwork golems, and worse. His surviving son, Lord Ollix Everling, is holding the whole thing together with a skeleton guard and a plea for discreet help. He is not asking for heroes. He is asking for people who will not talk.
The EverQuest II connection
Players who know this house from EverQuest II remember a haunted ruin where the Everling daughters drift the halls as ghosts, five centuries gone. EverQuest Legends is the prequel: you are inside the castle while the tragedy is still fresh, so the horror is happening around you, not echoing out of the past.
The basics
Type
Endgame Dungeon Crawl
Access
Account-wide unlock quest
Nektropos Castle is a level 46 and up indoor dungeon, so it is a Dungeon Crawl: a personal instance where nothing respawns naturally, rares appear on your map, and you clear toward them and the population to complete the crawl for its Bonus Chest and instance refund. The catch is the way in. The front gate is sealed behind a lengthy questline, and until you finish it you are not getting past the threshold. The reward for finishing is worth the grind: the unlock is account-wide and permanent, with no level restriction once you hold it.
Getting to Lake Nerius
The castle sits past Lake Nerius, the overgrown land that has crept up around the estate since the killings. To reach it, zone into Nektulos Forest and head west into Lake Nerius. Everything that opens the castle starts here.
The unlock questline
This is the account-wide unlock. Run it once and the castle is open for good on every character you own.
- Find Retainer Ozval at the huts in the middle of Lake Nerius and take his quest. Bind yourself here, you will be coming back to Ozval a lot.
- Recover Lord Everling's lost signet ring. It drops from the Corrupted Kedgspawn in the top-left of the map at /waypoint 2662, 1229, -115. It can be contested, so use /pick or your own private instance if the camp is busy.
- Return the ring to Ozval to turn it in.
- Visit Merchant Tyslin in North Felwithe and say "Ozval sent me". Confirm the item is in your bags before you leave the zone.
- Visit Merchant Rylin Coil in Ak'Anon and say "Ozval sent me". Again, check the item is in your bags before leaving.
- Return both merchant items to Ozval.
- Go to the Plane of Hate, second floor, and find the High Priestess of Ulkorruuk at /waypoint -90, 287, 127. Hail her and say "swear". Make sure the item is in your bags before you leave.
- Hand the Blessing of the Betrayer back to Ozval. Your account now has permanent, level-unrestricted access.
- Follow the path north and click the gates to enter the castle.
Small trap worth repeating: several steps warn you to confirm the quest item is actually in your bags before you leave the zone. Zoning out without it means a round trip, so check your inventory at each merchant and at the High Priestess.
Inside: the main quest walkthrough
The castle is a confusing multi-floor labyrinth, and the main quest is what carries you through it and unlocks the rest of the named. Every undead inside sees through standard invisibility, so plan to fight, not sneak.
- Talk to the quest-giver just inside, then build the Nektropos Library Key from four glowing items on the main floor (see the piano puzzle below).
- Head upstairs (good luck with the Head Librarian) and find Lady Sileniu Everling in the northeast of the second floor. Hail her and follow the prompts.
- Go back downstairs to Plimptos. Hail, then say "crimes", then "brought back".
- Talk to Alexa Everling's Maid in the southeast of the second floor to start the next part.
- Kill the Everling sisters in their rooms around the edges of the second floor.
- Return to Alexa's Maid for the Great Room Key.
- Kill Alexa in the southwest, just off the main hall on the second floor, to get the Private Chamber Key.
- Go to the northwest of the second floor. In the Guard Captain's room on the west side, a bookshelf hides a secret entrance down to the basement. Follow the corridor southwest toward the Lord, and kill the Juggernaut for the Basement Key.
- Enter the room beside the Juggernaut and fight Lord Everling (see the fight below).
- Return to Plimptos and say "end". Plimptos disappears.
- Go back upstairs to Lady Everling, say "dead" then "Confess", and kill her.
- Return to Lord Ollix and say "tragic" to end the quest. You can now open every door and kill every rare in the castle.
The Library Key piano puzzle
Four glowing items, one key
Collect four glowing items off the floor of the main hall, then combine them in the piano near Lord Ollix to make the Nektropos Library Key:
The Harpsichord Black Key from the Game Master in the southwest. The Harpsichord White Key from the box-filled storage area in the northwest. The Harpsichord String from the tormentor room in the southeast. The Harpsichord Plectrum from the Priestess of Ulkorruuk room, also in the southeast.
The Lord Everling fight
The 20 percent golem, and the burst at the end
The Lord is a damage-gate fight. Every 20% of his health he spawns a Golem that massively reduces the damage he takes. When it appears, kill the golem, ignore the zombies he keeps summoning, and go back to the Lord. Repeat at each 20% threshold.
The last stretch is the test. At the final 5% you have to burst the Lord down while a horde of zombies and the golem all spawn at once. Save your cooldowns for that window, keep the healer alive through the zombie wave, and push him over before the golem locks his damage down again.
The named and bosses
- Lord Rikantus EverlingThe grieving lord in the basement, the top-end fight, gated behind the Juggernaut and the whole main quest. The golem damage-gate plus the final-5% burst make it the real test of the castle.
- Lady Sileniu EverlingThe quest-critical Lady on the second floor. You hail her early, and return at the end to say "dead" and "Confess" before killing her.
- Alexa Everling and the sistersThe daughters around the edge of the second floor, gated behind Alexa's Maid and the Great Room Key. Alexa herself drops the Private Chamber Key.
- The Head LibrarianThe nasty upstairs fight guarding the collection. The rumored necromancer off-hand quest is said to start in the library, still being run down.
- The JuggernautThe basement guardian holding the Basement Key, right before the Lord.
- PlimptosThe ghoul on the first floor who drives the quest. Hail, "crimes", "brought back" early, and "end" after the Lord is down.
Loot and what is worth the trip
The main quest runs the length of the castle and ends in two high-end rewards, and clearing the household's dead raises your faction with the Everling Dynasty (you are cutting down the Host of Nektropos), which settles the quest NPCs inside. Beyond that it is a Dungeon Crawl, so the real draw is finishing the clear for the Bonus Chest and re-running it to farm the rare drops.
Known loot so far: Cryptguard, Checkmate (No Trade, Lore Equipped), the Handmaiden's Handwrap, and the Unbroken Golem Core. The two high-end main-quest rewards, the full drop table, and the rumored library necromancer off-hand quest are still being documented. This walkthrough is firsthand from launch week; the named-to-drop mapping will be filled in as it is confirmed.
Trio strategy
- Come endgame-readyLevel 46 and up, with a geared trio that has real healing and control. This is the first content in a while that genuinely tests a solo trio.
- Lean anti-undeadThe whole castle is undead and sees through invisibility, so Slay Undead and undead damage carry the clear. Stealth does not.
- Collect keys in orderLibrary Key, then the Great Room Key off Alexa's Maid, then the Private Chamber Key off Alexa, then the Basement Key off the Juggernaut. Each one gates the next, so do not skip ahead.
- Plan for the Lord's final 5%Hold your burst for the last threshold, where the golem and a zombie horde spawn together. That window is where undergeared trios lose the fight.
